  • The germination process begins when water is absorbed (imbibed) by the seed.
This initiates several biochemical events necessary for seedling development.
For example, enzymes secreted from the aleurone layer, break down starch in the endosperm converting it to simple sugars which nourish the embryo.

  • What are the conditions needed for germination of a typical seed?

Seeds remain dormant or inactive until conditions are right for germination.
All seeds need water, oxygen, and proper temperature in order to germinate.
Some seeds require proper light also.
Some germinate better in full light while others require darkness to germinate.

  • What are the functions of the different parts of the animal pollinated flower?

Anther is the MALE part of the flower that produces and stores pollen grains.
Stigma is the FEMALE part of the flower that receives pollen grains.
Pollination can be carried out with the help of wind or animals including insects or birds.
Generally these animals feed on nectar in the flower.

  • How is flowering controlled in long day plants?

In long day plants, the active form of the phytochrome pigment, leads to transcription of a gene that controls flowering (FT gene).
The FT mRNA is transported to the shoot apical meristem in the phloem, where it is translated into the FT protein.
