Why was Ellis Island closed?
By 1954, just three years later, President Dwight Eisenhower was ready to push immigration law enforcement in a radical new direction.
That year, the Eisenhower Administration decided to shut down six immigration detention facilities, including the one on Ellis Island.Why would a child be sent home from Ellis Island?
If immigrants had any of the diseases proscribed by the immigration laws, or were too ill or feeble-minded to earn a living, they would be deported.
Sick children age 12 or older were sent back to Europe alone and were released in the port from which they had come.Why is Ellis Island so famous?
Historic Immigration Station
From 1892 to 1924, Ellis Island was America's largest and most active immigration station, where over 12 million immigrants were processed.
On average, the inspection process took approximately 3-7 hours.This was the place immigrants were reunited with their family.
This place was on the first floor of Ellis Island.
It was called the Kissing Post because it was were the families all kissed and hugged each other.
The immigrants were relieved.
