What is a Hal interface?
By keeping the HAL interface generic, the application code can extend the HAL to include those custom features. As far as the HAL is concerned, the interface is nothing more than presenting a method for reading and writing hardware registers. Take a moment to look at the generic definition listed in Figure 6-2.
What is a hardware abstraction layer?
The hardware abstraction layer (HAL) provides a uniform abstraction for devices and other hardware primitives. The HAL abstracts the rest of the software from both the devices themselves and from certain elements of the processor. The real-time operating system controls basic system resources such as process scheduling and memory.
What is a Hidl-wrapped Hal?
A HIDL-wrapped conventional or Legacy HALs These HALs wrap existing HALs and can serve the HAL in binderized and same-process (passthrough) modes. Devices upgrading to Android 8.0 can use passthrough HALs. HALs listed in Passthrough HALs must be passthrough. All other HALs are binderized (including HALs that are vendor extensions).
Why did early computer systems not have hardware abstraction?
Many early computer systems did not have any form of hardware abstraction. This meant that anyone writing a program for such a system would have to know how each hardware device communicated with the rest of the system.
