What is the European Court of Human Rights?
The European Court of Human Rights is an international court based in Strasbourg, France.
It consists of a number of judges equal to the number of member States of the Council of Europe that have ratified the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms – currently 461.Effectiveness.
International law scholars consider the ECtHR to be the most effective international human rights court in the world.
According to Michael Goldhaber in A People's History of the European Court of Human Rights, "Scholars invariably describe it with superlatives".
Is the UK still subject to the European Court of Human Rights?
The Human Rights Act also requires UK courts, including the Supreme Court, to "take account" of decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (which sits in Strasbourg).
UK courts are not required, however, always to follow the decisions of that Court.
What is the difference between ECHR and ECtHR?

The ECtHR was set up in 1959, it is based in Strasbourg. 2.
It hears applications alleging that a contracting state has breached one or more of the human rights provisions concerning civil and political rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and its protocols.
