What is the Ottawa Convention on anti-personnel mines?
The Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction (also known as Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, Ottawa Convention, or Mine Ban Treaty) is the cornerstone of the international effort to end the suffering and casualties caused by anti-personnel mines.
When did the international campaign to Ban Landmines start?
Signing of the Convention began on 3-4 December 1997 in Ottawa, Canada, remaining open until the Convention entered into force on 1 March 1999. For their determination in calling for the Convention, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and its Co-Chair Jody Williams, were awarded the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.
How many anti-personnel mines have been destroyed?
It is the prime humanitarian and disarmament treaty aimed at ending the suffering caused by anti-personnel mines by prohibiting their use, stockpiling, production, and transfer, ensuring their destruction, and assisting the victims. Together, the States Parties have destroyed over 54 million anti-personnel mines.
Are anti-personnel mines causing new contamination?
More than 30 States Parties spoke on mine clearance and new contamination by anti-personnel mines of an improvised nature which is a major challenge in places like Colombia, Nigeria, and Yemen. Nigeria, the most populated country in Africa, which had concluded its mine clearance obligation in 2012, is experiencing new contamination.
