Reading – or writing a book about Cioran – you cannot but help wonder if Cioran himself would have approved of such an enterprise. To comment on a thinker proclaiming the futility of all things and the primacy of delusion, is not this “the heights” - to use the word in the title of his first book - of futility? However, it seems that neither Cior
Abstract
The exegesis of Cioran to date may be seen as a grid for what might be called a Cioran syndrome in Romanian culture. The author, claimed both by Romani-an and by French culture, is, at the same time, a function of Romanian culture, like Mircea Eliade or Eugen Ionescu. Much has been written about Cioran, but very little about his youthful pub-licati

What is Emil Cioran known for?
- Emil Cioran. Emil Cioran ( Romanian: [eˈmil t͡ʃoˈran] (listen); 8 April 1911 – 20 June 1995) was a Romanian philosopher and essayist, who published works in both Romanian and French. His work has been noted for its pervasive philosophical pessimism, and frequently engages with issues of suffering, decay, and nihilism.
How old was Cioran when he died?
- It was a rather touching irony that the author lived to the ripe old age of 84. By the time Cioran died in 1995, he had become a cult in France, attracting the sort of faddish attention he witheringly denounced in his work. Every life, he maintained, is utterly peculiar – and wholly unimportant.
What did Cioran study?
- Cioran had a good command of German, learning the language at an early age, and proceeded to read philosophy that was available in German, but not in Romanian. Notes from Cioran's adolescence indicated a study of Friedrich Nietzsche, Honoré de Balzac, Arthur Schopenhauer and Fyodor Dostoevsky, among others. [4]
