lactone, any of a class of cyclic organic esters, usually formed by reaction of a carboxylic acid group with a hydroxyl group or halogen atom present in the same molecule.
The proposed mechanism involves the intermediacy of the corresponding aldehyde resulting from a retro-aldol cleavage of the dicyanovinyl group; this aldehyde can then undergo an intramolecular aldol reaction with the enolate <1983BCJ1219> (Scheme 64).

What is the mechanism of action of lactone?

Macrocyclic lactones act as GABA agonists and also bind to glutamate-gated chloride channels in nerve and muscle cells of invertebrates.
