Hayabusa`s Adventure around a Tiny Asteroid Itokawa
What is asteroid Itokawa?
Itokawa, as seen by the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa in 2005. The asteroid is basicallya “rubble pile” of material held together by gravity. Image via JAXA/ISAS. The mineralogy and geochemistry of the dust particles were also found to be similar to chondrite meteorites, which fall to Earth regularly.
What is Hayabusa mission?
Artist's concept of Hayabusa at an asteroid. The primary scientific objective of the Hayabusa (formerly Muses-C) mission is to collect a surface sample of material from the small (550 x 180 meter) asteroid 25143 Itokawa (1998 SF36) and return the sample to Earth for analysis. It is also a technology demonstration mission.
What asteroid does the Hayabusa spacecraft land on?
The Hayabusa spacecraft touches down on the surface of asteroid Itokawa, marking only the second time in history that a spacecraft has descended to the surface of an asteroid. The Hayabusa spacecraft departs asteroid Itokawa and begins its return trip to Earth 3 months later.
When did Hayabusa rendezvous with asteroid 25143 Itokawa take place?
Rendezvous of the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa with the near-Earth asteroid 25143 Itokawa took place during the interval September through November 2005.
