Teach Essential Writing Skills
For would-be writers in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom I’ve adapted King’s ideas based on my 15 years’ teaching experience and sorted through a list of gaps in student capacity which is the raison d’être of this ebook The result is four essential skills that EFL students must learn in order to become better writers: |

Can the lexical approach be adapted for EFL?
The strategies presented can be used at multiple levels. The book includes sample lessons and activities, teaching vignettes, and a list of children’s literature. Note: Although aimed at U.S. K–12 instructors, it can be adapted for EFL contexts. Lewis, M. (1993). The lexical approach: The state of ELT and a way forward.
How can EFL students improve their writing skills?
As the performance of simple tasks (e.g. spelling, punctuation, subject-verb agreement) moves into the domain of subconscious action, EFL students can focus on higher order activities like efective redrafting, beter ideas, and paragraph cohesion.
What are the essential writing skills developed in Part 1 & 2?
The essential writing skills developed in Parts 1 and 2 (i.e. fluency, proficiency, style) prepare students for the challenging tasks in Part 3. The focus here is to help NNS students learn an inquiry-based approach to writing well-reasoned, logical arguments, a type of critical thinking (Hillocks, 2011).
Why is advanced writing skills for students of English important?
There is likely to be a good reason for it. Advanced Writing Skills for Students of English has been written as a series of discussion essays. It covers the topics that I feel are most relevant and useful for improving general writing skills (Part 1), followed by brief tips for specific areas of writing (Part 2).

1. INTEGRATED SKILLS
This section on integrated skills is not extensive. This is because an integrated-skills approach has become the standard approach to teaching English in most contexts and most modern general coursebooks are integrated skills. This common usage is probably why we could identify no teacher references that focus on integrated skills from a theoretica
