PDF Managing Spasticity in MS

Spasticity is caused by poor signaling between your brain and the muscles due to demyelination resulting in increased muscle tone muscle spasms and sometimes pain because those signals are not being transmitted correctly

  • How do you stop spasticity in MS?

“The simplest and often the most effective way to reduce spasticity is passive stretching, in which each affected joint is slowly moved into a position that stretches the spastic muscles.

  • What does MS spasticity feel like?

Spasticity is a symptom of multiple sclerosis that causes your muscles to feel stiff, heavy and difficult to move.
A spasm is a sudden stiffening of a muscle which may cause a limb to kick out or jerk towards your body.

  • What triggers increased spasticity?

Self-reports of spasticity suggest that triggers such as bowel- and bladder-related issues, menstrual cycle, mental stress, and tight clothing can all increase spasticity.

  • It is caused by damage to the spinal cord that occurs in people with cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, stroke or other conditions that affect the brain or spinal cord.
In cerebral palsy, the damage isn't reversible, meaning true spasticity doesn't go away on its own.

Spasticity may be aggravated by sudden movements or position changes, extremes of temperature, humidity or infections, and can even be triggered by tight clothing.

Symptoms

Spasticity refers to feelings of stiffness and a wide range of involuntary muscle spasms (sustained muscle contractions or sudden movements). It is one of the more common symptoms of MS. Spasticity may be as mild as the feeling of tightness of muscles or may be so severe as to produce painful, uncontrollable spasms of extremities, usually of the le

Benefits

Some degree of spasticity can provide benefit, particularly for people who experience significant leg weakness. The spasticity gives their legs some rigidity, making it easier for them to stand, transfer, or walk. The goal of treatment for these individuals is to relieve the spasticity sufficiently to ensure comfort and prevent complications, with
