How do you label organic compounds?
A third way of labelling organic compounds is using the terms saturated and unsaturated. Saturated compounds contain only single C − C bonds. Unsaturated compounds contain one or more double C = C bonds or triple C ≡ C bonds. You might remember from earlier that a C = C double bond is the functional group found in alkenes.
Why do organic molecules not count as compounds?
Because they are made from just one element, they don't count as compounds. Organic molecules are all based on the element carbon. Making up the backbone of all the organic compounds in the world is a big task, but carbon successfully rises to the occasion. But what makes it so versatile?
Is there a nomenclature quiz without advanced functional group naming problems?
No nomenclature quiz is complete without advanced functional group naming problems. Pay close attention to functional group priority so you know how to name these molecules. If you get stuck: Review videos 10-21 in the naming series, along with the Functional Groups Priority Cheat Sheet.
How to name organic compounds?
Every organic compound has a name. However, if you do not know the rules for naming them, you will not be able to find the compounds. In such a case, there is a unified rule for naming compounds. This is called the IUPAC nomenclature. Let’s follow the IUPAC nomenclature to understand how to name compounds.
Part 1 – Warmup
Let’s warm up with a simple set of linear and branched molecules. If you get stuck, review the first few videos in the nomenclature series. leah4sci.com
Part 2 – Naming Alkenes, Alkynes and Branched Chains
Here we take naming organic compounds a step further by adding pi bonds and branched substituents into the molecules. If you get stuck: Review videos 3-4 and 6-8, as well as Propyl Butyl and Pentyl Branched Substituents leah4sci.com
Part 3 – Naming Rings
In this section, we’ll practice naming rings including cyclo and bicycloalkanes. If you get stuck: Review video 5 in the naming series. leah4sci.com
Part 4 – Drawing Organic Molecules
Here we flip the question around. Can you draw the correct organic compounds from the given names? If you need help with drawing, review Drawing Skeletal Structuresas well as Organic Chemistry or Art Class? leah4sci.com
Part 5 – Naming Functional Groups
Ready to crank it up to the next level? Let’s practice naming molecules with additional groups on them including halogens and oxygen functional groups. If you get stuck, review videos 9-15 in the naming series. leah4sci.com
Part 6 – Naming Organic Compounds from The Molecular Formula
Professors won’t always draw them out nicely for you. Sometimes you’ll see tricky naming problems where all you have is a string of atoms and numbers. Pay VERY CLOSE attention to the hidden pi bonds and functional groups. If you get stuck: Review the Skeletal Structures videoagain to identify what’s hiding in the molecular formula. leah4sci.com
Part 7 – Naming Advanced Functional Groups
No nomenclature quiz is complete without advanced functional group naming problems. Pay close attention to functional group priority so you know how to name these molecules. If you get stuck: Review videos 10-21 in the naming series, along with the Functional Groups Priority Cheat Sheet. leah4sci.com
