ankylosing spondylitis blood test
What is ankylosing spondylitis?
Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that primarily affects your spine and hips. It can be difficult to diagnose because there’s no single test that can provide enough information for a definitive diagnosis.
Do high CRP levels indicate ankylosing spondylitis?
C-reactive protein (CRP): High levels of CRP may indicate inflammation. However, regular levels of ESR and CRP do not rule out an ankylosing spondylitis diagnosis. Blood tests will not be able to confirm what is causing the inflammation or whether you have ankylosing spondylitis. Instead, doctors use blood tests to rule out other conditions.
How do you know if you have anklyosing spondylitis?
Imaging tests can examine commonly affected areas such as your spine and pelvis to look for signs of anklyosing spondylitis such as: X-rays are the most commonly used imaging technique. However, changes to your joints aren’t often visible in the early stages of the disease.
Can a blood test diagnose ankylosing spondylitis?
At this time, no single test diagnoses ankylosing spondylitis. Your doctor may order a blood test to check for the HLA-B27 gene, which is present in most people with the disease. You may have the HLA-B27 gene and never develop ankylosing spondylitis, but it can give doctors more information when making a diagnosis.
Overview
This article is about Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis that affects the spine. It explains how physical exams and imaging tests are used to diagnose it, what treatments are available including medications and physical therapy, lifestyle changes that can help manage symptoms, and what questions to ask your doctor during an appointment. mayoclinic.org
Physical Exam
During the physical exam, your health care provider might ask you to bend in different directions to test the range of motion in your spine. Your provider might try to reproduce your pain by pressing on specific portions of your pelvis or by moving your legs into a particular position. You also may be asked to take a deep breath. mayoclinic.org
X-rays & MRI
X-rays allow doctors to check for changes in joints and bones, while MRI uses radio waves and magnetic field for more detailed images of bones and soft tissues. mayoclinic.org
Lab Tests
There are no specific lab tests for ankylosing spondylitis, but blood can be tested for markers of inflammation or HLA-B27 gene. mayoclinic.org
Treatment Goal
The goal is relieve pain/stiffness, prevent complications/spinal deformity; most successful before irreversible damage occurs. mayoclinic.org
NSAIDs & Meds
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used medicines; if not helpful then TNF blockers/IL-17 inhibitors/JAK inhibitors can be suggested with injections or oral consumption with side effects like reactivating tuberculosis and making prone to infections. mayoclinic.org
Physical Therapy
An important part of treatment that provides benefits from pain relief to improved strength and flexibility through exercises designed by therapist such as range-of-motion exercises, strengthening exercises etcetera . mayoclinic.org
