THE AMAZING UNIVERSE OF ANTS
Ant Anatomy Whereas humans and other vertebrates have internal skeletons ants like other insects have “external” skeletons or exoskeletons The exoskeleton is a hard protective casing around the body with softer tissues such as muscles and organs located on the inside Ants do not have lungs |
HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY: COURSE OVERVIEW

What is anatomy and physiology 2e?
Build customized assignments directly in your Learning Management System. Designed to keep your students engaged with a wide range of content and question types. Find out more here. Anatomy and Physiology 2e is developed to meet the scope and sequence for a two-semester human anatomy and physiology course for life science and allied health majors.
Do ants have a head and thorax?
Like other insects, ants do have a head, thorax, and abdomen, but the thorax and abdomen are not obvious... The ant’s mesosoma includes the thorax plus the front of the abdomen – they are fused together. The rest of the abdomen is divided into the petiole, post-petiole (when present), and gaster.
Why do ants have a petiole?
The petiole (and post-petiole, when present) provides a flexible junction, allowing the ant to bend its gaster forward to sting or spray. Finally, the entire body of an ant is covered by a hard exoskeleton that provides support, protection, and a barrier against water loss. You may have noticed we didn’t talk about ant heads.
Why do ants have different skeletomusculature and glandular morphology?
The variability in the skeletomusculature and glandular morphology in the sting base, between different aculeate groups and within ants, indicates diversity in the biomechanics of venom dosage and ejection, and gland product segregation. This observation has been much discussed previously but remains understudied both proximally and ultimately.
