When a substance is oxidized and reduced?
In general, you can say that a substance is oxidized when there’s an increase in its oxidation number. Reduction works the same way. Consider this reaction: Cu2+ (aq)+ 2e—® Cu(s) The copper is going from an oxidation number of +2 to zero. A substance is reduced if there’s a decrease in its oxidation number.
How do you combine oxidation & reduction half-reactions?
Note that electrons are added to the products side in the oxidation half-reaction and to the reactants side in the reduction half-reaction. This should always be true: Oxidation 1⁄2 Reaction: Br2 + 12OH ̄ à 2BrO3 ̄ + 6H2O + 10e ̄ Reduction 1⁄2 Reaction: We would like to combine these two half-reactions into a final overall reaction.
