  • How is a carboxylic acid converted into an ester?

    Esters are usually prepared from carboxylic acids by the methods already discussed. Thus, carboxylic acids are converted directly into esters by S N 2 reaction of a carboxylate ion with a primary alkyl halide or by Fischer esterification of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol in the presence of a mineral acid catalyst.

  • What is the reactivity of cyclic esters?

    Lactones, cyclic esters, have similar reactivity as acyclic esters. The most versatile method for the preparations of esters is the nucleophilic acyl substitution of of an acid chloride with an alcohol. Acid ahydrides and carboxylic acids can also react with alcohols to form esters but both reactions are limited to formation of simple esters.

  • Why do esters have lower vapor pressures than carboxylic acids?

    Because esters do not have hydrogen bonds between molecules, they have lower vapor pressures than the alcohols and carboxylic acids from which they are derived. Both carboxylic acids and esters contain a carbonyl group with a second oxygen atom bonded to the carbon atom in the carbonyl group by a single bond.

  • How do you name a carboxylic acid?

    The naming of a carboxylic acid is as follows: Name the parent compound by finding the longest continuous chain that contains the carboxyl group. Change the -e at the end of the name of the alkane to -oic acid. Carboxylic acids are weak acids, meaning they are not 100% ionized in water.
