stata generate variable multiple conditions
Does Stata have a 0 if InList() call is true?
for all the allowed syntax. Here each variable in Stata is born as 1 if the inlist () call is true and 0 otherwise. So I can't see that you need either of these lines
Is this 'else' command a Stata syntax?
As said that is not Stata syntax. Perhaps you are remembering the syntax of some quite different software. respectively? I understand that this 'else' command is still wrong, but I am not quite sure as to what command to state when I want VALID=0 for any other "SP" strings which are not mentioned in the above specified commands?
How does generate create a new variable?
generate creates a new variable. The values of the variable are specified by = exp. If no type is specified, the new variable type is determined by the type of result returned by =exp. A float variable (or a double, according to set type) is created if the result is numeric, and a string variable is created if the result is a string.
Why does Stata have a distinction between generating new values?
Because Stata is an interactive system, we force a distinction between replacing existing values and generating new ones so that you do not accidentally replace valuable data while thinking that you are creating a new piece of information. Detailed descriptions of expressions are given in [U] 13 Functions and expressions. Also see [D] edit.
