9mm bullet weight for competition
What weight should a 9mm bullet be?
The most common heavy 9mm bullet is 147 grain, and they go as low as 100-115 grains.
While grain is important for whatever bullet you're shooting, it matters far more in long-range marksmanship than short-range self-defense.
So don't get too hung up on grain regarding handgun rounds. Why use 147 grain 9mm ammo?
Answer: 147 grain 9mm loads were developed for use by US Navy SEALS in suppressed 9mm submachine guns.
They are heavy and subsonic for a reason.
In handguns, such rounds offer terminal performance that is underwhelming, to say the least.Federal® 9mm NATO features military-quality 124-grain FMJ bullets loaded to more powerful, higher-velocity specifications than rounds typically offered for the consumer market.
What is the best grain weight for 9mm competition?
Competition/Target Shooting
Typically, a 115-grain 9mm FMJ will be all you need, and you can get something on the slower side if you're just plinking or go with a higher-velocity round if you need to be able to knock over steel plates or something reliably.
