  • When should a patient take prednisone?

Take prednisolone with breakfast so it does not upset your stomach.
Taking prednisolone in the morning also means it's less likely to affect your sleep.
If your prednisolone tablets are labelled as "enteric coated" or "gastro resistant", you can take these with or without food but make sure to swallow them whole.

  • What is prednisone prescribed for?

It is used to treat a number of different conditions, such as inflammation (swelling), severe allergies, adrenal problems, arthritis, asthma, blood or bone marrow problems, endocrine problems, eye or vision problems, stomach or bowel problems, lupus, skin conditions, kidney problems, ulcerative colitis, and flare-ups

  • have ever had an allergic reaction to prednisolone or any other medicine. have an infection (including eye infections) or any unhealed wounds. are trying to get pregnant, are already pregnant or you are breastfeeding. have recently been in contact with someone with shingles, chickenpox or measles.

  • Why is a patient on prednisone?

When prescribed in certain doses, corticosteroids help reduce inflammation.
This can ease symptoms of inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis, asthma and skin rashes.
Corticosteroids also suppress the immune system.
This can help control conditions in which the immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues.

  • Prednisone is in a class of medications called corticosteroids. It works to treat patients with low levels of corticosteroids by replacing steroids that are normally produced naturally by the body. It works to treat other conditions by reducing swelling and redness and by changing the way the immune system works.
