a patient is to receive acetylcysteine
When should acetylcysteine be given?
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the mainstay of therapy for acetaminophen toxicity.
NAC has FDA approval for the treatment of potentially hepatotoxic doses of acetaminophen (APAP), and it is almost 100% effective if given within 8 hours post-ingestion.Introduction: N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the first-line treatment for acetaminophen (APAP) overdose.
However, using NAC inappropriately is associated with an increased risk of adverse effects as well as a substantial increase in hospitalization and healthcare costs.
Why would a patient take acetylcysteine?
Acetylcysteine is used for certain lung conditions when increased amounts of mucus make breathing difficult.
Acetylcysteine liquefies (thins) or dissolves mucus so that it may be coughed up.
Sometimes the mucus may have to be removed by suction.
This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription.
What is acetylcysteine prescribed for?
Acetylcysteine inhalation is used along with other treatments to relieve chest congestion due to thick or abnormal mucous secretions in people with lung conditions including asthma, emphysema, bronchitis and cystic fibrosis (an inborn disease that causes problems with breathing, digestion, and reproduction).15 mar. 2017
