Particularly, auditory discrimination allows people to distinguish between phonemes in words. Phonemes are the smallest units of sound in any given language. Auditory discrimination allows a person to tell the difference between words and sounds that are similar as well as words and sounds that are different. What Is Auditory Discrimination?
What are the goals for students with impaired discrimination?
Goals and benchmark examples for these skill sets are given below. Appropriate goals for the student with impaired discrimination include discrimination and/or recognition of speech under adverse listening conditions, recognition and use of key elements in spoken targets, and use of visual cues to assist speech recognition (e.g., speechreading).
How many auditory goals should I have?
It is helpful to use the Auditory Learning Guide and the Cottage Acquisition Scales for Listening Language and Speech to choose goals. Depending on need, it is advisable to have more than one auditory goal, but usually not more than two. This is mostly because you will usually have a language and speech goal, too.
Do boys have auditory discrimination?
The disorder has been linked to low birth weight, lead poisoning, ongoing ear infections, and other health problems. Though some research indicates that more boys may have this disorder than girls, it has not been definitively proven. An auditory discrimination problem may be found if the child has lasting problems with language and reading.
