b cell receptor types
LECTURE: 12 Title: B-LYMPHOCYTES SURFACE RECEPTORS
Distinguish B-lymphocytes in regarding to their cell surface receptors • Identify the definitive B-cell surface markers • Determine to which type of immune |
What are the types of B cells?
There are two main types of B-cells: plasma cells and memory cells.
Both types help protect you from infection and disease.
Plasma cells: Plasma cells release antibodies in response to antigens.
Once a B-cell becomes a mature plasma cell, it can release up to 2,000 antibodies per second. How many BCR are in a B cell?
Mature B cells express two BCR isotypes, IgM and IgD.
What type of receptors do B cells have?
The B-cell receptor (BCR) is a transmembrane protein on the surface of a B cell.
A B-cell receptor is composed of a membrane-bound immunoglobulin molecule and a signal transduction moiety.
The former forms a type 1 transmembrane receptor protein, and is typically located on the outer surface of these lymphocyte cells.BCRs must be presented an antigen on an MHC molecule from an APC.
TCRs mimic the structure of antibodies and are essentially the same.
BCRs are composed of amino acid chains & TCRs are composed of various carbohydrates.

- CD20. CD20 is a cell surface transmembrane phosphoprotein expressed only on B lymphocytes.
- CD19. CD19 is a surface protein expressed on B lymphocytes and follicular dendritic cells and belongs to the immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily.
- CD79b.
