  • How do you know if a baby is not growing well?

There are no symptoms of a baby not growing well. Your healthcare professional should be able to tell if there are any issues by measuring your bump during your antenatal appointments. This will show the midwives if there is steady growth, no growth or decline in the growth.

  • Why is my baby not growing in the uterus?

The baby is not growing inside the uterus at the normal rate. These babies usually have a low weight at birth. What causes IUGR? IUGR has various causes. The most common cause is a problem in the placenta (the tissue that carries food and blood to the baby). Birth defects and genetic disorders can cause IUGR.

  • What happens if a fetus is not growing during pregnancy?

Your healthcare provider will determine if there’s an underlying problem preventing the fetus from growing. In some cases, there may be no cause, and the fetus is born smaller than average. If the fetus is diagnosed with IUGR, your healthcare team will closely monitor fetal growth throughout the remainder of your pregnancy.
