How do you tow a barge with a towing pennant?
Once the eye of the pennant comes on board the tug, it must be made fast to the towing hook. The tug must then gradually take weight on the towing pennant and commence towing the barge with her emergency towing system.
How many barges can a tug tow?
The most common configuration is the single tow, where one tug tows one barge. Another configuration is the tandem tow, also termed double tow, where one tug tows two barges, which possess higher risk compared to a single tow.
Do you need a tow assessment for a barge?
The tug master, shipper and/or P&I club may require an assessment to be made by a recognised organisation of the barge under tow and its cargo, including structural strength and cargo fastenings. The British Tugowners Association has produced a comprehensive best practice guidance for tasks to be checked prior to performing a towage operation.
How do I tow a barge & a dead ship?
Towing barges and dead ships by their nature require careful consideration. There is a standardised method statement, in the form of a Barge Pro-Forma (see 4.3), which captures all relevant information for the Pilot, Tug Masters and FTNS.
