  • What is an example of barrel distortion?

    Common examples of barrel distortion include images of cityscapes, architecture, and interior scenes taken using wide-angle lenses.
    In these cases, straight lines such as buildings or walls often appear to curve outward at the edges of the image, making the scene appear unnaturally warped.

  • How do you calculate distortion?

    Distortion is calculated simply by relating the Actual Distance (AD) to the Predicted Distance (PD) of the image using Equation 1.
    This is done by using a pattern such as dot target.
    Note that while distortion runs negative or positive in a lens, it is not necessarily linear across the image.

  • How is TV distortion calculated?

    TV distortion method (ISO 9039)
    The bending of a straight line in the original image is quantified at the image's top edge (see figures below).
    The ratio of the bending over the height of the image multiplied by 100 is the percentage of picture height distortion.

  • Distortion is measured as the relative difference of the distance from image center to the distorted position and to the correct position, D = (h′−h)/h. The relationship is usually of the form D = ah2 + bh4 + ch6 + …. The coefficient a is positive for pincushion and negative for barrel distortion.
