basic concepts of probability
What is a theoretical probability?
A theoretical probability is based on a mathematical model where all outcomes are equally likely to occur. If you roll a die, pick a card from deck of playing cards, or randomly select a person and observe their hair color, we are executing an experiment or procedure. In probability, we look at the likelihood of different outcomes.
What is the probability of an event?
The probability of an event is a number between 0 and 1 (inclusive). If the probability of an event is 0, then the event is impossible. On the other hand, an event with probability 1 is certain to occur. In general, the higher the probability of an event, the more likely it is that the event will occur.
What does probability mean?
Explore what probability means and why it's useful. Probability is simply how likely something is to happen. Whenever we’re unsure about the outcome of an event, we can talk about the probabilities of certain outcomes—how likely they are. The analysis of events governed by probability is called statistics.
What is a conditional probability?
Some events can be naturally expressed in terms of other, sometimes simpler, events. A conditional probability is the probability that an event has occurred, taking into account additional information about the result of the experiment. A conditional probability can always be computed using the formula in the definition.
