basic principle of infrared spectroscopy
Principles of FTIR Spectroscopy
Principles of FTIR Spectroscopy In FTIR analyses Infrared light from the light source passes through a Michelson interferometer along the optical path The Michelson interferometer comprises a beam splitter moving mirror and fixed mirror |
Why is infrared spectroscopy non destructive?
Non-Destructive: Infrared Spectroscopy is non-destructive to the sample. Sample Constraint: Infrared spectroscopy is not applicable to the sample that contains water since this solvent strongly absorb IR light. Spectrum Complication: The IR spectrum is very complicated and the interpretation depends on lots of experience.
What is IR spectroscopy?
IR spectroscopy (which is short for infrared spectroscopy) deals with the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e. light having a longer wavelength and a lower frequency than visible light. Infrared Spectroscopy generally refers to the analysis of the interaction of a molecule with infrared light.
How does infrared spectroscopy work?
Infrared spectroscopy exploits the fact that molecules absorb frequencies that are characteristic of their structure. These absorptions occur at resonant frequencies, i.e. the frequency of the absorbed radiation matches the vibrational frequency.
Can infrared spectroscopy be used for quantitative analysis?
Quantification: Infrared spectroscopy works well for the qualitative analysis of a large variety of samples, but quantitative analysis may be limited under certain conditions such as very high and low concentrations.
