Remarque : Cette différence s'explique par le fait que deux isotopes possèdent des nombres de neutrons différents.Quels sont les isotopes ?
Les isotopes sont des atomes qui possèdent le même nombre d'électrons – et donc de protons, pour rester neutre -, mais un nombre différent de neutrons.
On connaît actuellement environ 325 isotopes naturels et 1200 isotopes créés artificiellement.Comment trouver l'isotope d'un atome ?
Chaque isotope du même élément chimique partage ainsi le même numéro atomique (Z), qui correspond à leur nombre de protons.
Ils se distinguent cependant par leur numéro de masse atomique (neutrons + protons) ; leur nombre de neutrons étant différent.- Exemple : L'élément chlore (Z=17) possède 2 isotopes : le chlore 35 ayant 18 neutrons et le chlore 37 ayant 20 neutrons. le 12C, le 13C et le 14C sont trois isotopes du carbone, car ils possèdent tous 6 protons.
