Drivers of perceptions of due impartiality: The BBC and the wider
The BBC is criticised as 'pro-establishment' or for perceived political bias by some audiences while others feel it comes across as inauthentic and politically |
Why does Ofcom regulate BBC?
Our job is to ensure that the BBC is delivering for audiences, and hold it to account for fulfilling its Mission and Public Purposes.
We also regulate the BBC's editorial standards and complaints, and work to protect fair and effective competition. What has happened to BBC News?
The first stage of these changes took effect on 3 April 2023, when the BBC World News channel changed its name to BBC News, and began to consolidate its on-air lineups and programming with the UK BBC News channel.
The British Broadcasting Corporation, commonly known as the BBC, is a public service broadcaster renowned for its quality programming and commitment to impartiality.
Can you complain to Ofcom about the BBC?
If however, you have made a complaint to the BBC, but the BBC has failed to provide a response within its own deadlines (these are contained in the BBC Complaints Framework), or you consider that exceptional circumstances apply, you can complain directly to Ofcom.

New Requirements to Hold BBC to Account
Ofcom is clear that the BBC needs to make its complaints process simpler and more straightforward for people to navigate. It must also be more transparent and open about its decision-making. This is essential for building trust and improving its relationship with audiences, and for justifying why it should continue to enjoy the unique position of h
Meeting Audiences' Needs in A Digital Age
Ofcom also sets an Operating Licence that ensures audiences across the UK are well served by the BBC. It is currently specific to individual TV and radio services, with limited recognition of content online. Without reform, the Licence will become out of step with audience behaviour and technology developments. So, we have today proposed to moderni
Next Steps
Our consultation on the BBC’s new Operating Licence is open until 14 September 2022. We expect to issue our final decision and updated Licence in early 2023, in time for the new Licence to take effect on 1 April 2023. The Government is conducting its mid-term Charter review. We will update the Operating Licence following completion of this review i
