Finding big black ants in your home can be shocking and scary. What exactly are they, how did they get in and what are they looking for? Most of all, how can you get rid of them, fast? Unfortunately, most big black ants found in people’s homes are carpenter ants.
What do black ants look like?
These black ants (Formica subsericea) have a black body and black legs. Light gray markings are distinguished on the abdomen. They grow to an average size between 4 and 8mm. Silky Filed Ants are known to be very timid and they run away when encountering humans.
What are the smallest black ants in California?
Little Black Ants (Monomorium minimum) are some of the smallest black ants in the country. Worker ants measure 1-2mm while queen ants measure 4 – 5mm. These ants live in multi-queen nests. They are highly common in Southern California as well as around the bay area around San Francisco. Food preferences aren’t very specific for the species.
