How do I generate cumulative antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) reports?
Several distinct approaches can be used in generating cumulative antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) reports from a microbiology laboratory database. These approaches include manual data collection or the use of analytical surveillance software such as WHONET ®, MedMined ®, VigiLanz ®, TheraDoc ® and Pharmacy OneSource ®.
Which organisms should be included in a cumulative antibiogram?
For example, E. coli and Citrobacter freundii likely would have >30 isolate occurrences within a year; however, E. coli would be considered a more relevant organism to list on a practical abbreviated antibiogram while C. freundii can be reserved for the full cumulative antibiogram.
Why should we read antibiograms?
The complexity of the processes that contribute to the emergence and dissemination of resistance cannot be overemphasized. Interpretive reading of antibiogram allow to understand epidemiological data about resistance mechanisms, to establish measurements for the control of infections, and to set policies on the use of antimicrobials.
