What do the flags mean? Each flag has a different history and in 1995 both were recognized as official flags of Australia under Commonwealth legislation

PDF Q and A – Flying the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags

The Aboriginal Flag was designed by Harold Thomas a Luritja man from Central Australia According to Mr Thomas the meaning of the flag is represented through:

  • What is the order of the Australian and Aboriginal flags?

For example, if the Australian National Flag was being flown with a state flag, the Australian Aboriginal Flag and a local government flag, the Australian National Flag would be flown on the far left (the position of honour), followed by the state flag, the Australian Aboriginal Flag and the local government flag.

  • What is the flag protocol in Australia?

    Flag precedence
Where all flagpoles are the same height and positioned in a straight row, the Australian National Flag should always be positioned on the far left (meaning the left of a person facing the building).
The correct precedence or order for flying flags in the community is: Australian National Flag.

  • What is the correct way to fly the Aboriginal flag?

It is also important that flags are flown in an upright position.
For the Aboriginal flag, this means that the black half is above the red.
For the Torres Strait Islander flag, this means that the star is positioned below the dhari.

Flags may be displayed on a stand. The Australian flag has precedence as the tallest flag in the centre. This arrangement places the Aboriginal flag on the left as next in order of precedence. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags are interchangeable depending on location.
