What is the principle of SAR?
To create a SAR image, successive pulses of radio waves are transmitted to "illuminate" a target scene, and the echo of each pulse is received and recorded.
The pulses are transmitted and the echoes received using a single beam-forming antenna, with wavelengths of a meter down to several millimeters. While RAR systems are constituted by a measuring station with a fixed point of view and direction of view with a 1D imaging capability, SAR systems are constituted by a measuring station where the sensor has a controlled movement (typically rectilinear) that allows the same target to be observed from different points
Does the military use SAR?
With its dynamic imaging capabilities, it's easy to see why SAR is utilized and integrated into military and intelligence operations.
What is a synthetic aperture radar?
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) refers to a technique for producing fine-resolution images from a resolution-limited radar system.
It requires that the radar be moving in a straight line, either on an airplane or, as in the case of NISAR, orbiting in space.
