  • What did people wear in the 12th century?

    Men wore knee-length tunics for most activities, and men of the upper classes wore long tunics, with hose and mantle or cloaks.
    Women wore long tunics or gowns.
    A close fit to the body, full skirts, and long flaring sleeves were characteristic of upper-class fashion for both men and women.

  • What was the royal fashion in the 1200s?

    A mantle was worn as a formal wrap.
    Men also wore hose, shoes, and headdress.
    The clothing of royalty was set apart by its rich fabric and luxurious furs.
    Hair and beard were moderate in length, and men generally wore their hair in a "pageboy" style, curling under at neck length.

  • A robe, tunic, or kirtle was usually worn over the shirt or doublet.
    As with other outer garments, it was generally made of wool.
    Over this, a man might also wear an over-kirtle, cloak, or a hood.
    Servants and working men wore their kirtles at various lengths, including as low as the knee or calf.

    Peasant men wore stockings or tunics, while women wore long gowns with sleeveless tunics and wimples to cover their hair.
    Sheepskin cloaks and woolen hats and mittens were worn in winter for protection from the cold and rain.
