How did Herceptin save a woman's life?
Since its introduction in 1998, Herceptin has saved nearly 3 million women’s lives by targeting a specific genetic alteration. This was an entirely new way of treating cancer. How did you come up with the rationale for developing this drug?
Is Herceptin inherited?
Herceptin is an antibody that works by attaching itself to the HER2 protein. The HER2 alteration occurs when there are too many copies of the HER2 gene in the tumor cells. The normal cells do not have that mistake. It’s a genetic mistake that occurs. It's not inherited.
How does Herceptin work if breast cancer cells overexpress HER2?
Breast cancer cells that overexpress the HER2 gene are said to be HER2-positive. Herceptin works by attaching itself to the HER2 receptors on the surface of breast cancer cells and blocking them from receiving growth signals. By blocking the signals, Herceptin can slow or stop the growth of the breast cancer.
Does Herceptin cause depression?
Some people taking Herceptin may experience depression. In clinical trials, depression was reported in 6% to 20% of people taking Herceptin for breast cancer. Fatigue (lack of energy) is also a common side effect of Herceptin. Fatigue can contribute to depression in some people. Receiving a cancer diagnosis can cause a variety of emotions.
