Students use American Sign Language within and beyond the school setting. This standard focuses on the value of American Sign Language as a tool for communicating with other ASL speakers throughout one’s life in school, in one’s local community, in the larger American Deaf community, and as the lingua franca of the wider Deaf World.
What is the American Sign Language Teachers Association (aslta)?
All of these activities point to the need for a national organization of teachers of ASL and Deaf Studies. The American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) fulfills this need. ASLTA is a national, professional organization of ASL and Deaf Studies teachers established in 1975. ASLTA was affiliated with the NAD from 1975 to 2004.
Where can I get a degree in American Sign Language & Deaf Studies?
Many universities and colleges offer degree programs in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies. You may also gain qualified experience as an ASL teacher with the goal of eventually getting a certification from the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA). The ASLTA also hosts workshops and annual professional development conferences.
