apa style cited in secondary sources
What is a secondary source / indirect citation?
Secondary Source / Indirect Citation (as cited in...) A secondary source (also known as an indirect citation) is used when the ideas of one author are published in another author’s text but you have not read or accessed the original author’s work. Generally, it is best to access the original source for the information and cite that source.
How do you cite a primary source in a citation?
If the year of publication of the primary source is known, also include it in the text citation. For example, if you read a work by Lyon et al. (2014) in which Rabbitt (1982) was cited, and you were unable to read Rabbitt’s work yourself, cite Rabbitt’s work as the original source, followed by Lyon et al.’s work as the secondary source.
How do you cite a source in APA?
However, if you need to cite a source within a source, follow the guidelines from APA 7, Section 8.6. For example, imagine that you found a quotation from Culver that you wish to use in your text; however, you found this information in Jones and were unable to locate Culver’s original source.
How do you cite Lyon et al?
Only Lyon et al.’s work appears in the reference list. If the year of the primary source is unknown, omit it from the in-text citation. In scholarly work, a primary source reports original content; a secondary source refers to content first reported in another source.
