What does a leading '0' mean?
A leading ‘0’ (zero) acts as a flag that indicates that output should be padded with zeros instead of spaces. This applies only to the numeric output formats. This flag only has an effect when the field width is wider than the value to print. Thanks, i want to apply this for 1 column. say 5th column in a file. How can i modify this?

Thanks for the help! +1 coercing to a numeric value by adding 0 is the most correct way to do this in awk. The ^ is the start anchor and 0* means zero or more 0 characters. So this effectively removes all 0 characters at the start of the variable.
