b cell types and functions
Where does B cell development occur?
Early B cell development and commitment to the B cell lineage occurs in the foetal liver prenatally, before continuing in the bone marrow throughout life.
What are the 4 types of B cells?
There are four main B cell types: transitional, naïve, plasma, and memory cells. A transitional B cell is the link between immature B lymphocytes in the bone marrow and mature B cells in lymphoid organs. These cells have differentiated into B lymphocytes from common myeloid progenitor cells in the bone marrow; however, they are not yet mature.
What is a B cell?
The B lymphocyte (B cell) is one of the most important cells of the body. These cells form part of the adaptive immune response by producing antibodies and presenting antigens to T cells. Once activated, they can mature into plasma cells or memory B lymphocytes. This article covers B cell development and subtypes.
