    The major biocatalytic synthesis strategies At present, there are three major biocatalytic routes for the synthesis of lactones: (1) Baeyer–Villiger oxidations, (2) oxidative lactonisations of diols and (3) the reductive cyclisation of γ‐ and δ‐ketoesters.
