What is the body condition score for a dairy cow at calving?
For spring calving cows the score should be 3 at weaning (mid-pregnancy), 2.5 at calving time and a minimum of 2 at mating time. For autumn calving cows the body condition score should be 2 in mid-pregnancy, 3 at calving and 2.5 at mating (bulling).How do you evaluate body condition score in dairy cattle?
Cows should be scored by both looking at and handling the backbone, loin and rump areas. Since the pin bone, hip bone, top of the backbone and ends of the short ribs do not have muscle tissue covering them, any covering you see or feel is the combination of skin and fat deposits.- The scoring method involves a manual assessment of the thickness of fat cover and prominence of bone at the tail head and loin area. You should stand directly behind the cow to score both areas and always handle the animal quietly and carefully using the same hand.
