1/2 normal saline hypotonic
What is hypotonic saline?
Doctors have traditionally used intravenous fluid that contains a lower sodium concentration than is found normally in human serum; this is known as hypotonic saline.
What is a hypotonic concentration of sodium chloride?
A hypotonic concentration of sodium chloride. Hypotonic concentrations of sodium chloride (0.45%) are best for parenteral maintenance fluids rather than aggressive intravascular volume repletion. Within each 100 mL of 0.45% sodium chloride Injection USP, there is 7.7 mEq of sodium ions and 7.7 mEq of chloride ions.
What is a hypotonic IV fluid?
0.225% Sodium Chloride Solution is often used as a maintenance fluid for pediatric patients as it is the most hypotonic IV fluid available at 77 mOsm/L. Used together with dextrose. Another hypotonic IV solution commonly used is 2.5% dextrose in water (D2.5W).
Should I give a hypotonic solution to a patient?
Never give hypotonic solutions to patient who are at risk for increased cranial pressure (can cause fluid to shift to brain tissue), extensive burns, trauma (already hypovolemic) etc. because you can deplete their fluid volume.
