acid anhydride examples and uses
What are examples of acid anhydride?
Sulfur trioxide
Sulfuric acid Dinitrogen pentoxide Nitric acid Carbon dioxide Carbonic acid Acetic anhydride Acetic acid Acetic Anhydride is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a strong, vinegar-like odor.
It is used as an esterification agent for use in preparation of modified food starch and for acetylation of acetylated monoglycerides.
What are the uses of anhydride?
The organic anhydrides are used to introduce the acyl group (RCO) in organic synthesis.
They react with water to give carboxylic acids, with alcohols or phenols to give esters, and with ammonia and amines to give amides.
- They are used in the manufacture of many things like pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, explosives and perfumes.
- Synthesis of esters by acetylation of alcohols.
- Synthesis of aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid)
- Synthesis of heroin by deacetylation of morphine.
- Use as a protecting group.
