These human-made aerosols enhance scattering and absorption of solar radiation.
They also produce brighter clouds that are less efficient at releasing precipitation.
How do aerosols affect condensation?
In air with high concentrations of aerosols, water can easily condense on the particles, creating a large number of small droplets (right).
These clouds are dense, very reflective, and bright white.
How do aerosols affect the climate?
Aerosol particles affect the Earth's climate by acting as the seeds on which clouds form.
More aerosol particles can lead to more, but smaller, cloud droplets.
This may reduce the rain that falls from that cloud.
Aerosol particles also shape the climate as they circulate in the atmosphere.
How do aerosols effect albedo?
An increased amount of aerosols may increase the CCN number concentration and lead to more, but smaller, cloud droplets for fixed liquid water content.
This increases the albedo of the cloud, resulting in enhanced reflection and a cooling effect, termed the cloud albedo effect (Twomey 1977; Figure 3b).
