Introduction to Categorical Data Analysis Readings for Section 0 –Agresti: Preface Section 1 1 Why bother with this class? Outcomes/variables of interest are discrete; e g : gender race species (nominal) age category dose level income bracket (ordinal) Why do we need techniques that apply specifically to these sorts of outcomes ? |
Unit 4 Categorical Data Analysis
counts are categorical data A categorical variable is measured on a scale that is nominal (eg – religion) or ordinal (eg – diagnosis coded as “benign” “suspicious” or “malignant”) Unit 4 (Categorical Data Analysis) is an introduction to some basic methods for the analysis of categorical data: (1) association in a 2x2 table |

What are the key distributions for categorical data?
This tion presents the key distributions for categorical data: the binomial and multinomial distributions. Often, categorical data result from n independent and identical trials with two outcomes for each, referred to as “success” and “failure.” These are generic and the “success” outcome need not be a preferred result.
What are the basic methods of categorical data analysis?
Chapters 1 and 2 describe some standard methods of categorical data analysis oped prior to about 1960. These include basic analyses of association between categorical variables. Chapters 3–7 introduce models for categorical responses. These models regression models for continuous response variables.
What is a special case in categorical data analysis?
An important special case is matched pairs that result from observing egorical response for the same subjects at two separate times. The book (Chapter 11) with a historical overview of categorical data methods. Most methods for categorical data analysis require extensive computations. Appendix discusses the use of SAS statistical software.
How do you summarize categorical data?
For a single categorical variable, we can summarize the data by counting the of observations in each category. The sample proportions in the categories the category probabilities. An Introduction to Categorical Data Analysis, Second Edition. By Alan Agresti Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
