Ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass requires the separation of its fractions through pre-treatment methods Pre-treatment breaks down the lignin

  • What process breaks down cellulose?

Cellulolysis is the process of breaking down cellulose into smaller polysaccharides called cellodextrins or completely into glucose units; this is a hydrolysis reaction.
Because cellulose molecules bind strongly to each other, cellulolysis is relatively difficult compared to the breakdown of other polysaccharides.

  • What is the mechanism of cellulase hydrolysis?

Cellulases cleave glucosidic bonds by using acid-based catalysis.
The hydrolysis is performed by two catalytic residues of the enzyme: a general acid (proton donor) and a nucleophile/base.
The catalytic mechanism which occurs depends on the spatial position of the catalytic residues.

  • Why is cellulose hydrolysis important?

Glucose produced by catalytic hydrolysis of cellulose is an important platform molecule for producing a variety of potential biobased fuels and chemicals.
Catalysts such as mineral acids and enzymes have been intensively studied for cellulose hydrolysis.

  • Cellulose is a polysaccharide with beta ( 1→4 ) glycosidic linkages which cannot be hydrolyzed easily.
Also, there is no enzyme present in human body to digest it.
Why is cellulose more difficult to digest than other polysaccharides?
