chemical test to distinguish between phenol and benzoic acid
Which chemical is used to distinguish between phenol and benzene?
Ferric Chloride Test
The given solution mixture is treated with a small amount of ferric chloride.
The phenol present in the mixture reacts with the ferric chloride to give a violet-colored complex.
This shows the availability of phenol.
But benzene does not offer any characteristic color change. What chemical tests distinguish between benzoic acid and phenol?
Ferric chloride test: Phenol reacts with neutral FeCl3 to form an iron-phenol complex giving violet colouration.
But benzoic acid reacts with neutral FeCl3 to give a buff coloured ppt. of ferric benzoate.

Litmus Test
Aim- To detect the presence of a phenol functional group in a given sample.
Theory- Litmus paper changes colour if the solution is acidic or basic.
Acidic solutions turn blue litmus paper into red and basic solutions turn red litmus paper into blue.
Phenols are acidic, so they show the litmus test.Benzoic acid and Phenol : Benzoic acid and phenol can be distinguish by FeCl3 tests.
Both reacts with FeCl3 to give different colours.
Phenol reacts with FeCl3 to give violet coloured precipitate while benzoic acid give buff coloured precipitate.1 fév. 2017
