chemistry aldehydes ketones and carboxylic acids notes
What are aldehydes and ketones in chemistry?
An aldehyde is an organic compound in which the carbonyl group is attached to a carbon atom at the end of a carbon chain.
A ketone is an organic compound in which the carbonyl group is attached to a carbon atom within the carbon chain.
Aldehydes and ketones generally have lower boiling points than those of alcohols.1: Detecting an aldehyde or ketone Aldehydes and ketones react with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNP or 2,4-DNPH) to form an orange or yellow precipitate.
No precipitate is formed with other carbonyl compounds such as carboxylic acids or esters.
What is the name of the reaction of aldehyde ketone and carboxylic acid?
.
2) Wolff-Kishner Reduction.
Aldehydes and Ketones undergo reaction with hydrazine to form hydrazine derivative.
The hydrazine derivative can undergo further reaction with base and heat to form the corresponding alkane.
Combination of these two reactions is called Wolff-Kishner Reduction.
