Chomsky formule l'hypothèse, hautement probable, selon laquelle l'individu par lui-même (c'est-à-dire en dehors du champ socioculturel) contribue en grande partie à l'élaboration de la structure du langage (Conférence de 1971) et simultanément montre l'existence d'une structure, d'un schématisme générateur de langage.

Chomsky est souvent décrit comme un anarchiste socialiste, sympathisant de l'anarcho-syndicalisme, et est considéré comme une figure intellectuelle majeure de la gauche américaine.
Plus généralement, il est une référence pour bon nombre de courants de gauche et d'extrême-gauche dans tous les pays occidentaux.Le but de la grammaire générative est de décrire la compétence des sujets parlants et d'approcher la description de la faculté de langage propre à l'espèce humaine.
