What is the 360-day method?
Day Count Conventions
Actual/360 uses the actual number of days in a month (usually 30 or 31) over a 360 day year; this method is used primarily for commercial loans, as it almost always produces higher income for the lender than the other two popular methods.Why a year is 360 days in accounting?
Before calculators and computers, accountants had to perform financial calculations with pencil and paper.
A calendar year with 365 or 366 days doesn't divide evenly across the 12 months, so it became standard practice to record interest on accounts payable using a 360-day year, treating each month as 30 days.30/360: This is the simplest way a lender calculates interest.
Because there are 365 days in a normal year, and 365 cannot conveniently be divided by 12 months into a whole number, the lender simply assumes that there are 12 equal, 30-day months (or a 360-day year).
What is 360-day year convention?
This convention stipulates the month will always be treated as having 30 days in it, and the year will consistently be treated as having either 360 or 365 days.
Swap markets using the 30/360 convention for the fixed rate of a swap include the U.S. dollar, the euro, and the Swiss franc.
