What does it mean when the activity coefficient is greater than 1?
As approaches 1, the substance behaves as if it were ideal.
For instance, if ≈ 1, then Raoult's law is accurate.
For > 1 and. < 1, substance B shows positive and negative deviation from Raoult's law, respectively.
A positive deviation implies that substance B is more volatile.
Can activity be larger than 1?
While activity coefficients are one or less for ions in aqueous solution, activity coefficients for some other species, such as dissolved gases, may be greater than one.
Can activity coefficient be 1?
For a gas, a pure solid, a pure liquid, or a non‐ionic solute, the activity coefficient is approximately one under most reasonable experimental conditions.
For a gas the proper terms are fugacity and fugacity coefficient, instead of activity and activity coefficient.
An activity coefficient of less than one indicates that the solution has a negative deviation from ideality.
This means that the activity of an ion is lower than its actual concentration.

Conversely, when activity coefficient is greater than 1.0, it implies that molecules have strong repelling force and exhibits positive deviation from Raoult's law. In this case, lesser energy is needed to separate the constituent molecules.
